2011 BMW 6 Series - Spy Shots

The current BMW 6 Series (E63/E64, the “64” representing the convertible version) has been on the market since 2004. Although it’s an excellent-driving, large grand touring machine, it’s most notable at the moment for being the last holdout in BMW’s lineup from the “Bangle-Butt” era (so named for BMW’s former chief designer, Chris Bangle, who some feel tarnished The Ultimate Driving Machine’s styling for many years). And no BMW model has exemplified Bangle’s bulbous trunk philosophy more than the 2004-2010 6 Series.

Since 2010 marks the seventh year for the big coupe, it’s about time for an all-new version. And the spy photos captured here prove, indeed, that BMW is hard at work bringing the 6 in line with the rest of the BMW clan.

As for the test mule’s styling, we can see a rather weak attempt to hide the new 6 Series’ all-new trunk design. Although the trunk cladding is an obvious attempt to make the prototype look similar to the current car, we’re confident that peeling the psychedelic layer would reveal a much more svelte appearance, rumored to take some cues from the beautiful E24 6 Series of the 1970s and 1980s.
